In the minds of ESL exam candidates, e ssay writing is one of the most daunting tasks they are required to complete, regardless of the level of the exam, the administering body or the ease with which they themselves use the language. The same applies to students who are asked to write an essay by their teachers at school. In the previous sample essays posted on the blog, the main point I stress is the need to become acquainted with this form of writing (as opposed to writing a letter, review or report, for instance), to get a feel of what authorial voice is and how to organize and progressively express the arguments you wish to make in a coherent manner. Unfortunately, the best way to prepare for exam writing or learn how to write good essays for school is to read as many essays from as many sources as possible, then write as

If you are not taking an exam but need ideas on what qualities an effective teacher should have, then read on and note down what you deem useful. If you intend to use this essay as part of an assignment, remember to paraphrase so as not to plagiarize.
The topic is similar to what candidates would expect in any other C2 level examination in that examiners want to see a well-organized, coherent and cohesive discussion of the issue with arguments, explanations and examples.

Teachers are one of society’s main building blocks.
What qualities must they have in order to be effective in their role?
Time and again, people have discussed,
quarreled over and praised education as it is one of the cornerstones on which
any society rests in our day and age. Teachers in particular have fallen under
the microscope in an attempt to see how they affect, both positively and
detrimentally, the development of children and young adults. Teachers’
qualities in specific are what parents and experts alike are trying to detect
in order to ensure a better future for children throughout the world.
From my experience, teachers should
possess three main virtues. First, they must be caring and selfless when it
comes to their pupils. Seeing as teaching is a service rendered to developing
members of society, a teacher must always think of the good of his or her
students first and foremost. What they do impacts not only teens, but society as a whole, as future lawyers, politicians, teachers or tradespeople of all kinds graduate from schools and universities eventually are the ones to shape the fabric of the world they inhabit.
Secondly, teachers must be highly organized in terms of what it is they are going to teach. Students immediately sense if a tutor is well-prepared and in addition to the feeling that this work done behind the scenes shows a teacher’s concern for the students’ education, pupils will become more interested in a subject which has been more than adequately prepared, simply because good preparation leaves no space for dallying or boredom. The result of this is a constructive lesson, better assimilation of material and an overall positive student attitude towards learning and school.
Lastly, a good teacher is one that displays a deep knowledge of the subject-matter he or she teaches. It is useless to make a student respect someone who seems to be usurping a teacher’s powers. How can a student listen to someone who does not seem qualified for the job they are supposed to be doing? Besides, a teacher that knows what they are doing, almost always means that they are well-prepared as well, reinforcing positive classroom co-operation and students' favorable opinion regarding studying.

In conclusion, teachers today are one
of the basic building blocks of a child’s personality and are therefore a vital
part of any society. There are many virtues a teacher must possess but the
three main ones are selflessness, preparation and knowledge of the course they
teach.
