In the minds of ESL exam candidates, e ssay writing is one of the most daunting tasks they are required to complete, regardless of the level of the exam, the administering body or the ease with which they themselves use the language. The same applies to students who are asked to write an essay by their teachers at school. In the previous sample essays posted on the blog, the main point I stress is the need to become acquainted with this form of writing (as opposed to writing a letter, review or report, for instance), to get a feel of what authorial voice is and how to organize and progressively express the arguments you wish to make in a coherent manner. Unfortunately, the best way to prepare for exam writing or learn how to write good essays for school is to read as many essays from as many sources as possible, then write as

If you are not taking an exam but need to discuss the reasons why people decide to attend college, then read on and note down what you deem useful. If you intend to use this essay as part of an assignment, remember to paraphrase so as not to plagiarize.
The topic is similar to what candidates would expect in any other C2-level examination in that examiners want to see a well-organized, coherent and cohesive discussion of the issue with arguments and examples written in approximately half an hour.

“People attend college or university for many different reasons. What are the three main reasons in your opinion?”
Education in our days is the most basic ingredient not only of a successful career, as many would be quick to conclude, but also a successful life in general. It is an undeniable fact that in an era where unemployment and restricted job opportunities plague societies, receiving merely a basic education is not enough. High school graduates therefore decide to continue their studies at tertiary level, and the reasons behind their decision, in my view, are three.
First of all, universities offer specialized knowledge. It is precisely at this level that students begin to refine their learning and are trained to think specifically about issues related to the field they hope to build a career in. Through the well-trained professors, amply equipped facilities and more demanding courses, university students move away from the rudimentary lessons and spoon-feeding approach many secondary schools are characterized by, and take their first steps as professionals in the sense that they begin to think as professionals would.
Secondly, many university students, especially older ones, enroll on courses because of personal satisfaction. That is to say, they decide to attend courses because they are interested in the subject they choose to study. This is usually the case with graduates who wish to obtain a second degree or those who go into further education. Retired citizens who are seen enrolling on campus classes also fall into this category. It is clear that such individuals are eager to learn more about something that intrigues them, so they decide to attend courses.
Finally, the majority of university students register in the hope of obtaining a degree that will make the qualifications section of their CV look impressive. As is obvious, the limited number of jobs has placed a strain on job applicants who always seek to improve themselves to stay ahead in the job market race. A degree from a prestigious university will strengthen their chances of finding and landing that much sought-after position in a firm.
It is therefore evident that although many go to university in order to secure a rewarding job for themselves, there are several who find studying a pleasure and therefore return to learn more about what they deem fascinating.
